Along with pastoring this terrific community of people at McKendree Chapel, I serve as Professor of Church History and Associate Dean for master’s Programs at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH.

In my spare time, I enjoy travel to foreign cultures, gardening, and just hanging out with friends. I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, grew up in Iowa, and left for Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. After hearing a call to ministry, I moved to North Carolina to study at Duke Divinity School. After pastoring in Bonn, Germany for two years, I then returned to the states to study historical theology at Drew University in New Jersey. Ministry has taken me to Germany, England, and rural Iowa, and teaching to as far as Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

My main pastoral and scholarly interests are in the areas of church renewal, discipleship and Wesleyan Methodist studies. The books I’ve written include The Band Meeting (with Kevin Watson), Longing for Spring (with Elaine Heath), Mainline or Methodist? and Foundation for Revival. I am also one of the hosts of the bi-weekly podcast “Plain Truth: A Holy-Spirited Podcast.” You can check it out at or wherever you download podcasts.

I am married to Roberta, who is a reading interventionist at the Dayton Leadership Academies. We have five children: Maria, Susanna, Isaac, Tabitha, and Naomi.
